In 2014, with House Bill 5203, the governor and legislature established the Florida Consortium of National Cancer Institute Centers Program to "enhance the quality and competitiveness of cancer care in the state and further a statewide biomedical research strategy directly responsive to the health needs of Florida's citizens."
Each year, the consortium allocates $60 million to help Florida's cancer centers meet the rigorous scientific and research criteria required for NCI designation, through a competitive formula factoring in metrics for cancer care, research, and training.
The program has been renewed annually, contributing more than $300 million to support Moffitt Cancer Center; Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, University of Miami Health System; and University of Florida Health Cancer Center. The consortium led to the creation of the Florida Academic Cancer Center Alliance and has provided support to enable Moffitt to renew its NCI Comprehensive Cancer Center designation in 2016, and for Sylvester to attain designation in 2019.
